What Tai Chi classes offer

If you feel stiff, stressed, scattered or simply disconnected from your body, Tai Chi gives you a clear, structured way back to strength and clarity. You learn how to stand correctly, move efficiently and coordinate the body with the mind.

Whether your goal is physical wellbeing, stress management, confidence or deeper internal martial arts development, Tai Chi provides a steady and sustainable path forward. And Tai Chi is not only for relaxation. It is a complete martial art.

Tai Chi is power and strength

Most exercise creates muscular tension. Tai Chi trains the connective tissues that link the whole body together. Instead of creating tension, you learn how to build tensile strength, organise your structure and allow external force to effortlessly pass through your body.

Students feel more grounded, more balanced and more physically resilient within a few classes. Strength comes from energising and releasing, rather than brute force. This is why Tai Chi, when taught properly, feels light yet powerful.

Internal power, structure and Fa Jin

Tai Chi is famous for its ability to generate explosive internal power known as Fa Jin: a short release of energetic force produced through specific mental and physical mechanics. It is not about tension, or magic. It’s simple when taught correctly.

In Tai Chi Chuan you learn to:

  • Issue power without tensing
  • Root and unroot partners easily
  • Develop rebounding and whole body force
  • Move energy through conscious intention
  • Transform softness into crisp, explosive strength
  • Build power specific to your applications

Balance, calm and wellbeing

Students notice an improvement in balance and stability of the mind and body, and Tai Chi’s slow, mindful rhythm many students find calming. Students often report deeper sleep, less anxiety and a greater sense of emotional stability. This makes the practice helpful for:

  • Stability, balance and healthy ageing
  • Confidence and vitality
  • Athletic performance and returning to movement after injury
  • Stress reduction, mental clarity and emotional grounding

Testimonials

One of the best in the UK

If you want a true internal arts teacher in the UK, Jon is a gift. His skill is extraordinary, and his ability to transmit it is even more remarkable.

Usman

Phenomenal classes

I’ve been coming to Jon’s classes since January of 2024 and was quite nervous when I began, having had no experience of martial arts at all. What I found was a small group with an excellent teacher, all very welcoming. Jon is vastly experienced and (thankfully!) very patient. It might sound cliché but the classes, particularly Tai Chi, have been transformative. Highly recommended to both the experienced and the beginner.

Peter

Highly recommended

I have been with Jon for almost ten years, which is testimony itself for the quality and depth of his instruction in Tai Chi and Qigong.
