Dragon Style Kung fu

Dragon Style Kung Fu (Long Ying Kuen 龍形拳) is a rare and highly refined Internal Chinese martial art known for its precise method, internal mechanics and explosive power. Far from being a performance or flowery modern system, Dragon Style preserves a traditional method of training that develops whole-body connection, deep structural strength and martial ability. Join Dragon Style Kung Fu in Seaford and Hastings.

The classes in Seaford and Hastings follow the authentic lineage of Dragon Style, as passed from Lam Yiu Gwai to his son Lam Yiu Fai, to Grandmaster Cheung Kwok Tai in Hong Kong, and onwards to my teacher, Sifu Tom Braithwaite (DMAA). This ensures the system is taught with clarity, precision, and respect for its traditional roots.

Dragon Style Kung Fu in Seaford and Hastings

Dragon Style is an internal martial art, meaning power is generated from intent, structure and whole-body coordination rather than brute muscular force. Movements are performed with relaxed strength, spiralling force and a distinctive wave-like quality that allows practitioners to release explosive power (Fa Jin) from a calm, connected body.

In Internal Martial Arts, we train the body and the mind together, creating a strong, unshakable alignment that forms the foundation for internal power and explosive expression in life as well as in the dojo.

Internal Training Methods

Dragon Style is very different from many modern Kung Fu schools. The emphasis is not on choreography or acrobatics, but on method. We focus on how the body connects, how power is generated from the body and the mind and how intent drives our movement and energy.

Training focuses on:

• Developing the root and the centre through correct body method (Shen Fa)
• Creating whole-body power through alignment and intention
• Building a stable yet mobile structure
• Understanding the internal “dragon” mechanics of coiling, releasing and rebounding
• Training coordination and timing with internal pressure and intent

The result is a style that feels alive, vibrant and powerful, soft on the outside, fierce within. This is why Dragon Style Kung Fu develops genuine skill quickly, even for beginners.

Internal Power

Fa Jin and Explosive Power Development

A hallmark of Dragon Style is its ability to generate short, explosive bursts of power without tension or forceful muscular effort. This Fa Jin comes from:

• A rooted stance
• Whole-body connection
• Coordinated mechanics
• Relaxed but precise structure
• Focused intention (Yi)

This training allows you to issue power quickly and efficiently, which is ideal for martial application, physical development, mental fortitude or anyone wanting to feel more powerful and connected in their body.

Fun, Safe and Dynamic Two-Person Training

Our training system includes many fun partner exercises that help you build structure, awareness and internal strength. These drills are suitable for beginners and taught safely, without pressure or competitiveness.

Partner practices may include:

  • Rooting and uprooting exercises
  • Rebound drills
  • Bridge sensitivity
  • Two-person forms
  • Timing and distance play
  • Structural testing
  • Fa Jin releases

These exercises make the training alive, responsive and incredibly fun, whilst deepening your internal understanding and confidence.

Long Ying Kuen

Mind, Consciousness and Martial Intent

This is not just physical training. It is a mind-body art that teaches students to extend awareness beyond the body and direct power through intention.

Training includes:

  • Developing focused intent (Shen)
  • Strength in mind (Yi)
  • Quietening the mind
  • Expanding awareness
  • Feeling pressure, space and direction
  • Coordinating mind, body and energy

This internal work gives Dragon Style its depth and makes the practice feel alive, centred and powerful.

How Dragon Style Differs from Tai Chi

While Tai Chi is slow, calm and meditative, Dragon Style is:

  • Faster
  • More dynamic
  • More explosive
  • More focused on martial power
  • Better for cardiovascular development

Both arts share internal principles, but Dragon Style Kung Fu expresses them with greater intensity and expression. My recommendation is to train both systems. They are two sides of the same coin and complement each other incredibly well.
